The relative intensity (or amplitude fluctuations) decreases. This effect, which most clearly exhibits the fundamental difference between laser light and light from normal lamps was first predicted in my 1964 paper and has since been verified experimentally. A thorough experimental study of a laser close to and at its threshold has been performed in particular by Arecchi and coworkers [a]. While the Langevin equation approach which I had used did not allow me to treat the immediate vicinity at threshold, this problem could be solved by Risken  who interpreted my quantum mechanical Langevin equation as a classical one and established its corresponding Fokker-Planck equation which he then solved.
