This quantity includes the lectures and seminars awarded on the NATO complex research Institute on "Coherence in Spectroscopy and glossy Physics," the 7th process the overseas tuition of Quantum Electronics, affiliated with the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for clinical tradition, Erice, Sicily. The Institute was once held at Villa LePianore (Lucca), Versilia, Italy, July 17-30, 1977. The foreign university of Quantum Electronics used to be begun in 1970 with the purpose of supplying guide for younger researchers and complex scholars already engaged within the region of quantum electronics or wishing to change to this zone from a distinct historical past. From the outset the college has been less than the path of Prof. F. T. Arecchi, then on the college of Pavia, now on the collage of Florence, and Dr. D. Roess of Siemens, Munich. every year the administrators select an issue of specific curiosity, alternating basic themes with technological ones, and ask colleagues particularly efficient in a given sector to take the clinical accountability for that course.

The solia and the dashed lines represent the original wave and a second wave to which we have added a phase difference. If the phase lag between the two wave tracks is zero we obtain 1 for the degree of mutual coherence. If the time difference between the two waves is bigger than to we obtain J'= o. If the time difference lies 27 COHERENCE IN SYNERGETICS 0 and t we obtain a partial overlap between the two waves which leads to I~P1Ying inbetween 0 and 1.

The relative intensity (or amplitude fluctuations) decreases. This effect, which most clearly exhibits the fundamental difference between laser light and light from normal lamps was first predicted in my 1964 paper [7]and has since been verified experimentally. A thorough experimental study of a laser close to and at its threshold has been performed in particular by Arecchi and coworkers [a]. While the Langevin equation approach which I had used did not allow me to treat the immediate vicinity at threshold, this problem could be solved by Risken [9] who interpreted my quantum mechanical Langevin equation as a classical one and established its corresponding Fokker-Planck equation which he then solved.

The nutation and FID calculations lead directly to the two pulse echo solutions which we consider in various applications in the next lecture. References to Lecture II 1. R. G. Brewer and R. L.
